Facebook has come a long way since its inception. I remember creating my first FB account back in 2008; sending messages used to be a clunky and unpleasant experience. Since then, Facebook has improved by leaps and bounds. When the Facebook messenger was announced as a standalone app, it caused a stink bomb, with people complaining about the change. Statistically, Facebook has a total of 2.07 billion monthly active users as of the third quarter of 2017.
Facebook Messenger, on the other hand, had a total of 1.3 billion active users. From the original dissident to more than 1 billion Facebookers using it; FB Messenger has come a long way.
Along the way, FB Messenger has been updated and upgraded continuously.
Currently, various tips and tricks can be used. So all you Facebook Messenger users (The fact that you are reading this article proves that you use Facebook Messenger), Let us see how many of them you know already.
For starters, how many of you know that you can use it as a web client? Or how to check if your message has been read? Or that you can react to a message that has been sent to you? Or how to change the color/emoji and assign nicknames?

1. Using Phone Number to login
If you are one of the people who abhor Social Media, don’t worry Facebook Messenger still cares for you. There is now an option to login using your Mobile Number; so you don’t need a Facebook Account to be able to use Facebook Messenger.
You can also sync your contacts using their Phone number, with the option to use Facebook Messenger as your default SMS app.
2. Support Multiple Accounts
On the other hand, if you are one of the people who own multiple accounts; whether it be for organizations or you just have two or more accounts, Facebook Messenger supports multiple Accounts.
To add a new account; click your profile and go to ‘Switch Accounts,’ Click the ‘+’ button, add your info and click ‘Add/OK.’
To switch to an already added account; click your profile and go to Switch Accounts, tap on the account you want to login to, put in your password if prompted and click ‘OK.’
3. Voice and Video Calling
Why waste your money? When you can call your friends via the Facebook Messenger App.
Provided that both the parties have Facebook Messenger installed; you can call your family and friends using the Voice call or the Video call feature of FB Messenger.
Just click on the phone icon on the top right for Voice calls and the camera icon on the top right for Video call.
4. Voice Clip and Video messages
Writing long text messages can be tiring for your thumbs, why not just send a voice message? You can send up to 1-minute long voice messages so talk away.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video must be worth a Sextillion words (That’s a real number by the way).
You can send video messages up to 15 secs long. You can also edit and put filters before sending your video messages.
I am sure most of you are aware of the fact that you can send Emojis in your chat. But did you know that you can supersize your emojis?
Just long press on your emoji and watch as it inflates; when you feel it is big enough, let go, and there you have it. Your first Supersized Emoji. But don’t press too long or you will burst the emoji just like a balloon.
6. Stickers and Animated GIFs
A recent survey shows that millennials prefer stickers and GIFs to words. I personally feel that there is no better response to a message than a perfect GIF.
In Facebook Messenger, you can choose from the collection of default stickers. There is a treasure trove of different sticker collections that you can choose from for free. Whether you are a South Park fan or a die-hard biker; don’t worry, Facebook Messenger has got your back.
If stickers aren’t your thing, you can also input various Gifs. You can choose from the top trending GIFs or search for an appropriate GIF.
Just click on the emoji icon and swipe for stickers or GIFs.
7. Group Conversations
I am sure that you know how to make a group and send messages to a group. But did you know that you can create a poll in a group conversation?
Click on the ‘+’ sign and click polls. Create your list of choices and submit it.
There you go, no more endless debate on where to go for lunch, you can thank me later.
You can also directly mention a person in a group chat by using ‘@’ followed by the person’s name. This will create a prompt so that the person you are targeting won’t miss the message.
You can also kick people out, even if they are the one who created it in the first place. Just click the group info icon located at the top right, locate the person who has incurred your wrath, click the vertical ellipsis (three vertical dots) and click ‘remove from group’.
8. Location Share
You agreed to meet up with a friend, but you don’t know the location. Using FB Messenger, he can send you his location. Click on the ‘+’ sign and click location. Click the ‘pin’ icon on the top right and send current location.
Imagine you are going to a rough neighborhood, or your significant other doesn’t trust you to not go to the pub, or that annoying employee keeps calling you “Where are you?”, “Where did you reach?”; Now you can share your real-time location for 1 hour so that they can live track your movements. Just click on the ‘+’ sign and click “Share Live Location for 60 min”.
9. Messenger Code
Facebook recently introduced a new feature to their messenger app, except it is not actually new.
Similar to how Snapchat has a Snapchat code, FB has introduced Messenger Code. Their functions are the same, i.e., to alleviate the messy process of adding new friends.
You can view your messenger code by tapping on your profile and clicking on your profile pic in the middle of the screen. In the left tab, you have the ‘Scan Code,’ and in the right tab, you have ‘My Code.’
10. Hidden Emoji Effects
Now, I want you guys to try something on your Facebook Messenger App.
Choose one of the following emoji and send it to a friend of yours: Balloon/ Basketball/ Football(Soccer)/Heart/ Snowflake. What did you see?
For those who sent a balloon or a heart or a snowflake; sending a balloon makes the screen fill up with balloons, a heart makes the screen fill up with heart and sending snowflake makes it snow on your screen. There are various hidden interactions with emojis in Facebook Messenger.
Now those who sent a basketball or a football, did nothing happen to your screen? Click on the emoji that you have already sent, and you will start a mini-game on your FB Messenger app. Clicking on the basketball takes you to a free shot challenge; where you swipe to throw the ball into the hoop. Clicking on the football takes you to a game of keepie-uppie. Tap on the ball and try to keep it in the air as long as possible.
There are some other emoji effects, can you find them yourself?
11. Chat Heads/Preview
Now, do you get a chat head whenever you receive a new message? I absolutely loathe these chat heads.
How about the preview function? When you have your phone on the table, and you receive a message; you can view the first part of the message as well as who sent them. I don’t like the fact that people can view these pieces of information.
If you don’t like these functions, you can simply disable them. You can disable chat heads by clicking your profile icon on the top right section of the app and disable chat heads. You can disable notification preview by clicking your profile icon on the top right section (again), tap ‘Notifications and Sounds’ and disable ‘Notification Preview’.
12. Uber/Lyft Rides
Facebook entered into a partnership with Uber and Lyft in 2015. Since then, you can book a cab using your Facebook Messenger app without leaving the messenger app.
To request a ride, click on the little car icon on the bottom of your screen. You can then choose the service you require from the pop-up.
To avail this feature, Uber/Lyft service has to be available in your city. You will also need to sign up and have the Uber/Lyft app installed. The first time you do this, you will be guided through a small setup process; however once done, you will be able to view Uber/Lyft as one of your contacts and chat with them to request their services.
Do you need to quickly loan to/from a friend? You need to add a debit card to your Facebook account, and you can use it to send/receive money from Facebook Messenger directly. All transactions are free but limited to debit cards only.
Currently, this feature is only available in the US.
14. Messenger Day
Messenger Day is Facebook Messengers take on story sharing. Similar to the Instagram story, Whatsapp story and Snapchat story, you can post various photos/videos that are deleted after 24 hours.
Messenger day boasts a collection of 5000 frames, stickers, and effect to satisfy all your story needs.
Your story along with your friends are shared at the top of the Messenger app. You will have to update your Messenger app to its latest version to make use of this feature.
15. Secret Conversation
To all you Privacy Savvy people out there, Facebook Messenger has one to one encrypted communication, i.e., “Secret Conversation.” They use Signal Protocol (Which even Edward Snowden approves of) such that only you and the other person can view it.
Tap on the information ‘i’ icon in the chat of the person you intend to start a secret conversation with and tap ‘Go to Secret Conversation.’
You will be directed to a new chat where all your messages are encrypted.
You can send messages with a timer such that they self-destruct after they’re seen, and the timer is up. Almost James Bond right?
16. Message Requests
Did you know that you have another folder of messages that you don’t see?
Facebook Messenger titles it ‘Message Requests.’ These are messages sent by people who are not in your friend list. Facebook Messenger typically associates these messages with spams and don’t send you a notification. Only in rare cases where it thinks you might know the person who sent the message will you be prompted.
Tap on your contact list, found at the bottom of the app, and tap ‘Message Requests’ to access these messages. It might be a good idea to periodically check this other inbox in case you miss a message from someone you might know.
Facebook Messenger has a load of chatbots available for you to fiddle with.
Ever wondered what it is like to chat with an algorithm?
Tap the lightning shaped icon on the bottom right of the app and select any of the bots from the list to find out!
From NEWS organizations such as CNN, Wall Street Journal or The Guardian to sports news such as Machaao (Cricket assistant) and Goal.com to organizations such as 1-800 Flowers to directly buy flowers; there is a plethora of bots available to satisfy all your chatbot needs.
18. Third Party Apps
Now, Facebook Messenger has a load of third-party app support. To view them, open any chat and tap the ellipsis on the lower right side of the app. There you will find an option for ‘Get apps for Messenger’; which has all compatible apps listed.
If you need to send a work document from your Dropbox; you can install the Dropbox messenger app. What about sharing music with your friends? Use the Spotify extension.
There are various games as well as an app that are compatible with messengers such as Giphy, Bitmoji, Pinterest, Gfycat and more.
19. Facebook Lite
For all you people who have a slow, bad or limited internet connection, you can download and try Facebook Lite.
It is fast and is only 10MB in size. It uses less mobile data and works everywhere.
It also runs on most phones as long as your phone uses Android version 2.3 or higher.
Using Messenger From Desktop
Facebook messenger also has a desktop version. So it’s not necessary to have a mobile for using messenger. It has a web page that we can open also having no facebook account.
Filter Messages in Facebook
Facebook is known to have two kinds of filtering systems – the basic and the strict. Under basic filtering, users will be able to see messages in their inbox from their friends, friends of friends, etc. Strict filtering, on the other hand, blocks messages from unknown persons.
How Do I Like Something on Facebook Without Everyone Seeing It?
Believe it or not, with the developments in the privacy settings of the Facebook, it is now possible to like status or other stuff without everyone to let know about it.
This can be accomplished by limiting the posts in the privacy settings of Facebook. It is possible to limit the posts to family, friends or even no one in accordance with your choice.
How Do You Find Your Hidden Messages on Facebook?
A number of people are unaware of the fact that Facebook has a spam section where the hidden messages are generally stored.
To view the filtered messages, you need to visit the Facebook Homepage at first after which you need to click on messages in the left column under Favorites. As you look at the top of the page, on the left-hand side, you will be able to see Message Requests. As you click on the same, you will be able to view the hidden facebook messages.
Next, to that, you have to move to More. You will see a drop-down menu. You have to click on Filtered Messages to view the secret messages.
What Does It Mean To Be Active on FB Messenger?
You can view the same under the Help section of the Facebook messenger. As you look for viewing the conversations in the messages, you will be able to see when your friends interacted recently on Facebook. So “Active now” means they are active now on facebook whereas “Active 3 minutes ago “ indicates they were active in messenger 3 minutes back.
The Facebook Messenger App has come a long way since its founding days.
There are so many features that are currently in their alpha/beta stage.
